Orquídeas de la Patagonia (2023)

Patagonian Orchids is a 1-hour non-fiction feature film made by the visual artist Pilar Quinteros (Santiago, Chile, 1988) in southern Chile; Coyhaique, Puerto Aguirre and its surroundings. The work, filmed in formats as diverse as Super8 mm, mini DV and digital, is the result of a search for local stories about foreign species (introduced for commercial purposes) and local ones, confronted and forced to coexist.

The investigation begins with the compilation of local stories about nature in the Aysén region. In these stories, nature near the city generally has personality and behaves in ways that sometimes seem to defy humans. It defends itself. It complains too.

The impression that people relate to the wild environment, transform it and alter it while they receive a response from it, motivated me to represent the parts involved, as if it were a fable. A story that finds its central drama in the confrontation between local and foreign species, conflict that I chose to represent after two very opposite sides, almost rivals. On one side is the Patagonian Orchid, who represents the local, with pride and elegance. Indignant, she witnesses what happens in the region with the entry of various external beings, represented, in this case, by the Chinook salmon. The latter, confused and clumsy, are shown in their different stages of the production and breeding line, being victims and trying to defend themselves in a hostile and alien context.

It is, therefore, a project that crosses concepts related to ecology, construction of the idea of ​​nature and post colonialism.

Orquídeas de la Patagonia es un largometraje de no ficción de 1 hora de duración realizado por la artista visual Pilar Quinteros (Santiago, Chile, 1988) en el sur de Chile; Coyhaique, Puerto Aguirre y sus alrededores. La obra, filmada en formatos tan diversos como el Super8 mm, mini DV y digital, es resultado de una pesquisa de relatos locales sobre especies foráneas (introducidas con fines comerciales) y locales, enfrentadas y forzadas a convivir.

La investigación comienza con la recopilación de historias locales sobre la naturaleza en la región de Aysén. En estas historias, por lo general, la naturaleza cercana a la ciudad adquiere personalidad y se comporta de formas que algunas veces parecen desafiar al ser humano. Se defiende. Se queja también.

Esta impresión de que la gente se relaciona con el entorno salvaje, lo transforma y lo altera a la vez que recibe una respuesta de ello, me motivó a representar las partes involucradas como si se tratara de una fábula y un relato que encuentra su drama central en el conflicto entre dos bandos muy opuestos, rivales casi. Por un lado está la Orquídea Patagónica, quien representa a lo local, con orgullo y elegancia. Indignada, es testigo de lo que pasa en la región con el ingreso de diversos seres externos, representados, en este caso, por los salmones Chinook. Estos últimos, confundidos y torpes, son mostrados en sus distintas etapas de la línea de producción y crianza, siendo víctimas y tratando de defenderse en un contexto hostil y ajeno a ellos.

Es, por tanto, un proyecto que cruza conceptos relativos a la ecología, construcción de la idea de naturaleza y post colonialismo.
