Working Class (2025)

My project for the 19th Istanbul Biennial (September 2025) takes as its starting point and is motivated by the story behind the monument The Worker (1973), formerly located in Tophane Park, which was repeatedly destroyed for 49 years during the various protests that took place in the city. Sometimes a leg was missing, then the head, and so on. During that same period, the artist who made the sculpture, Muzaffer Ertoran, was constantly called upon to restore it. For 49 years… When I learned about this story, a mixture of feelings and memories emerged in me.

The work for the Biennial was a cardboard sculptural installation that highlights the fragmentation to which the sculpture The Worker was subjected, with all its pieces scattered throughout the exhibition space. In addition, a non-fiction short film of 21:38 minutes, featuring an interview with Muzaffer, was projected in a space right next to the installation. In the mockumentary, he can be seen discussing the somewhat annoying case of his sculpture in the workshop, which was actually my own during the production of the Biennial piece. Alongside this conversation, images of the art action in Tophane Park, showing remnants of the mass-produced body parts and different pieces scattered around the city, are included.

Mi proyecto para la 19 Bienal de Estambul (septiembre de 2025) toma como punto de partida y está motivado por la historia detrás del monumento The Worker (1973), anteriormente ubicado en el Parque Tophane, que fue destruido repetidamente durante 49 años a lo largo de las diversas protestas que tuvieron lugar en la ciudad. A veces faltaba una pierna, luego la cabeza, y así sucesivamente. Durante ese mismo período, Muzaffer Ertoran, el artista tras la escultura, fue por 49 años llamado para restaurarla. 49 años… Cuando supe de la historia, una mezcla de sentimientos y recuerdos personales me invadieron, sin duda.

La obra para la Bienal fue una instalación escultórica de cartón que pone de relieve la fragmentación a la que fue sometida la escultura The Worker, con todas sus piezas dispersas por el espacio expositivo. Además, en un espacio justo al lado de la instalación se proyectó un cortometraje de no ficción de 21:38 minutos, que presenta una entrevista con Muzaffer. En el falso documental, se le puede ver hablando sobre el caso un tanto molesto de su escultura en el taller, que en realidad era el mío durante la producción de la pieza para la Bienal. Junto a esta conversación, se incluyen imágenes de la acción artística en el Parque Tophane, mostrando restos de las partes del cuerpo producidas en masa y diferentes piezas dispersas por la ciudad.
