Impossible Phoenix is my first attempt to create a secular ceremony in the current times. The idea of holding a ceremony to constantly remember and assign new meaning to the symbol of the Phoenix first appeared during my two and a half month long stay in London, at the end of 2018. Walking around the city and searching online, I found two figures representing the Phoenix; one of them forms part of the design in the circular structures that were used to store gas in the Vauxhall neighborhood, and will be demolished in the near future. The other was part of a project that was never built. This second Phoenix is part of the original design of The Monument, a memorial of the Great Fire of London of 1666, and is located in the City of London. Its upper part has as an ornament that is somewhat difficult to identify by passersby.
Perhaps I noticed this symbol because of the complex personal process I was going through at that time; I had just faced being diagnosed with a degenerative and chronic health condition. It was a difficult time, but it was also beautiful in its own way; I got to see myself in a new light, and I accepted the fact that one is breaking down and reassembling for as long as we are meant to live. This can be understood in different ways. I guess each person lives life their own way.
I took these two designs and built a 12-meter-long object out of a flexible material (fake leather) that a group of people transported from Gasworks Art Residency to Kennington Park, where the ceremony that I called Impossible Phoenix was performed. This is an event I hope to do every December 8th, each time in a different way and a different place.

Impossible Phoenix es mi primer intento por crear una ceremonial secular en los tiempos que corren.
La idea de realizar una ceremonia para recordar y resignificar siempre el símbolo del Ave Fénix apareció durante mi estadía de dos meses y medio en Londres a fines del 2018. Dando vueltas por la ciudad y por internet, encontré dos figuras que representaban al ave Fénix; una que forma parte del diseño de una de las estructuras circulares que antes servían para almacenar gas en el barrio de Vauxhall y que se demolerán en un futuro próximo. El otro fue parte de un proyecto que nunca fue construido. Este segundo fénix es parte del diseño original de The Monument, un memorial del Gran Incendio de Londres de 1666 que está ubicado en la City de Londres, cuya parte superior tiene como ornamento algo que el transeúnte no sabe bien qué representa.
Quizás me fijé en este símbolo por el proceso personal complejo en el que me encontraba en ese momento; justo me tocó hacerle frente al diagnóstico de un problema de salud de tipo degenerativo y crónico que me encontraron. Fue una época difícil pero linda de reconocerme y aceptar que uno se está rompiendo y volviendo a armar, durante todo el tiempo que le toque vivir. Esto se puede entender así desde diferentes formas, cada persona lo vive de formas distintas, me parece.
Tomé estos dos diseños y construí un objeto de 12 metros de largo en un material flexible (cuero falso) que un grupo de personas transportó desde la residencia de arte Gasworks a Kennington Park para llevar a cabo una ceremonia que llamé Impossible Phoenix. Este evento espero realizarlo de diferentes formas en lugares distintos todos los 8 de diciembre.
