The Arrieta Foundation was a social, entertainment and recreation center, which served as a theater and circus, founded by Luis Arrieta Cañas, the sixth mayor of the borough of Ñuñoa in Santiago, Chile, at the turn of the 20th century. The Arrieta family owned much of the land in the borough of Peñalolén (also located in Santiago) where they had their summer home and held literary and musical gatherings and hosted many intellectuals passing through the country.
This cultural activity, in addition to the community support offered by José Arrieta, came to a halt with population explosion in Santiago. In the 1930’s, large areas of the Arrieta’s land were subdivided, and the local government began to build housing there. The Arrietas’ stake as landowners began to dwindle, until their land was completely sold off in 1954.
Today, the building where the Arrieta Foundation promoted and hosted cultural activities in the area near Américo Vespucio and José Arrieta Streets is a waste collection center and building material vendor.
La Fundación Arrieta fue un centro social y centro de entretenimiento y recreación (con funciones de teatro y circo) fundada por Luis Arrieta Cañas, sexto alcalde de la comuna de Ñuñoa, a comienzos del siglo XX. La familia Arrieta era propietaria de muchos terrenos de la comuna de Peñalolén en los que tenían su casa de veraneo y en donde realizaban tertulias literarias y musicales, además de recibir a muchos intelectuales de paso por el país.
Toda esta actividad cultural, además de las ayudas gratuitas a la comunidad que ofreció José Arrieta, culminaron con la explosión demográfica de Santiago. En los años 30 comenzaron a lotearse muchos terrenos del Parque Arrieta y luego se construyeron viviendas por parte del Gobierno en ese sector, lo que fue deteriorando el parque hasta que terminó por venderse por completo en 1954.
Actualmente el edificio de la fundación que fomentó la actividad cultural en el sector de Américo Vespucio y José Arrieta es un centro de acopio de escombros y venta de material de construcción.
