It all started with an empty lot that was once an indigenous burial ground, taken apart years ago to ensure its “conservation”. This place is two blocks away from my house in Santiago, Chile. Back in 2015 I worked on a short documentary called “Indian Cemetery” (https://pilarquinteros.com/2015/08/18/cementerio-indio-2015/) covering this same discovery, and the reasons made me go deeper into this subject.
“Der Gegenschein”, a 20 minute short, is in some way a continuation of this investigation. It’s my way of granting visibility to something that cannot normally be seen by the naked eye, like death, and like the astronomic phenomenon by the same name. The Gegenschein is an astronomic event discovered by Alexander von Humboldt, in which the light of the sun is reflected on cosmic dust, giving it a slight glow. It’s hard to see, as any amount of light (natural or artificial) or contamination in the air will make it invisible. It can be perceived in very specific situations and only a few get the opportunity to see it. But it’s about the light of the sun in the opposite side of the Earth, something that’s always there even if we can’t see it. And I believe that in this empty lot occur a lot of things that passers-by don’t know of and can’t see, making it a very interesting site in which to think of a landmark or memento mori.
The short video starts with a series of conversations. I go and talk to people that I believe have formed an opinion about the destruction of the cemetery, what has been done to it and what could be done with the place today. I call a medium and visit the headquarters of the Theosophical Society of Santiago (where they meet every Monday). After doing some research, my plan takes me to the construction of a ladder to go over the fence of the empty lot at night, in order to feel the place and pay my respects to the ones who were buried there in the best way I could at the moment. For that reason, I see the ladder as a portal between our dimension, the street, and this profaned holy site. The installation of this object was done on a Wednesday at 4 in the morning. Just like the Gegenschein, it could only be observed at night.
Todo comienza con un sitio vacío que una vez fue un cementerio indígena, desmantelado hace unos años para su «conservación». Este lugar está a dos cuadras de mi casa en Santiago, Chile. En 2015 hice un trabajo llamado Cementerio Indio sobre este mismo descubrimiento y las razones me llevaron a entrar en este tema.
“Der Gegenschein”, corto de 20 minutos, es, de alguna manera, la continuación de esta investigación. Es la forma que tengo de hacer visible algo que no se puede ver a simple vista, como lo es la muerte, así como sucede también con el fenómeno astronómico que lleva el mismo nombre. El Gegenschein es un evento astronómico descubierto por Alexander von Humboldt en el que la luz del Sol se refleja en el polvo cósmico generando un leve resplandor. Es difícil de ver, ya que la más mínima luz (natural o artificial) o rastro de contaminación en el ambiente la vuelve invisible. Se le puede percibir en situaciones muy particulares y pocos pueden tener la oportunidad. Pero se trata del brillo del Sol en sentido opuesto a éste, algo que siempre está ahí, aunque no podamos verlo. Y creo que en este terreno vacío suceden muchas cosas que los transeúntes no saben ni pueden ver, lo que lo hace un sitio muy interesante para pensar un hito de señalamiento/memento mori.
El corto parte con una serie de conversaciones. Voy directamente a la gente que creo puede tener una opinión formada sobre la destrucción del cementerio, cuál es el estado actual de ese lugar y qué se puede hacer hoy con él. Llamé a una medium y visitaré a la sociedad Teosófica de Santiago en su sede (se reúnen los lunes). Luego de investigar un poco mi plan me lleva a construir una escalera de la altura de la reja para ir ahi de noche a sentir el lugar y a presentar, como lo sentí en ese momento, mis respetos y disculpas a los muertos que estuvieron enterrados. La escalera, por tanto, la considero un portal conectivo entre nuestra dimensión, la calle, con este sitio sagrado profanado. La instalación del objeto fue un miércoles a las 4 de la mañana. Como el Gegenschein, solo pudo verse en acción de noche.
